After my graduation project that took me about one year and a half I decided to start a new render project. It will be a cinema mediatheque in Turin, next to the most fammous building in the city: the Mole Antonelliana.
The library will be designed by a colleague and I will take care of the 3d visualization. This is a medium time work in progress, supposed to end in october. The first part to be modeled is the old ruined theatre of Turin demolished during the World War II.

Floor become walls, walls become roof, roof become columns.
This time I ended with a similar stadium shape with entrance, corridors, tribune and main field, one repeated module that connect with the previous and the next creates paths and shows flows.

Some quick doodles about relaxing surface in 3DSMax. The aim of this exercise is to discover new kind of connections and new shapes generated by the definition paths. It starts from a low poly mesh consisting of a single mesh describing the paths and the connections between levels and floors, then tesselate the surface and apply a relax modifier. In this example I tried to define a single paths that brings to different levels of the same "building".

SpaceMan low poly

I have recently discovered this wonderful DirectX Shader (link) and post production shaders (link) so I decided to test these shaders with a low poly model. After some thinking I quickly came up with a space man guy. I spent few days for the textures.

This is the first attempt in low poly model and texture drawing, so, pardon my inexperience, I learn a lot of things from this exercise like UV mapping, texture painting and space optimization.
My target is to build a papercraft of this spaceMan, that's why I didn't worked on bump and normals: I made directly the low poly object without hi-poly modeling and I directly painted the diffuse and specular textures. Next time!
I used this time also for discovery the directX shader and the real time visualization directly in the max viewport.

Working with the idea of unconventional shelf I did some "3d paper sketching" trying to build a shelf with random spaces. The next step is the optimization of spaces and make something useful. The model is build with withe rectangular paper strip (9cm x 4cm).

The new "archicomic" manifesto of the Bjarke Ingels Group just bought in Barcelona at the RAS Bookshop.
I reccomend this book as a guide about how to approach a project, new systems of rappresentation, new way of thinking out of the box in today's urban planning. One of the best book bought this year!

Simple Waffle Shingle

In these days I'm searching some forms for an external element for a kindergarten. It has to fill the space between 2 roofs to give a sense of uniformity of the whole structure.
The base surface is done in Rhinoceros and the waffle system developed in Grasshopper, then printed and cutted. This is the first model for investigating the final form.

The last lab of my university carreer. We putted a residential area, an artistic cultural center, a skyscraper with offices and a hotel, a shopping mall and an auditorium with 3 hall, one capable of 600 people and the other 2 of 320 people each.
The area was occupied by the aerospatial company Alenia.
We used grasshopper for the generation of the skyscraper: it provide the generation of the diagrid sistem, the floors and all the 7000 windows.

THAToNE Skyscraper WIP

This is a skyscraper that I'm developing for an university lab.
The base model was generated in rhino with grasshopper.
This is the first preview for a first revision of the design with the teachers.

I develop this shape testing different graph modifers that change the scale and rotation of the floor shape. Then I applied a triangulate Grasshopper operation and a diagrid operation.

Some nights ago I discovered wire parameters in 3ds Max. Thery are very useful for many purpose. My main interests are in architecture, but I can find some application for the wire parameters in architecture animations.

This is my first model in ZBrush. I followed the great tutorial on the 3dCreative mag by Wayne Robson. Modeled from zspheres in about 7 hours, learning in the same time the software. That was the first time i did something in ZBrush

Ok, this evening I decided to change the most important texture of this huuuge project. I made a 3500x2000 render and the bricks text was the worste piece of jpg I ever seen in my life. It was so blurred. I downloaded a texture from this site cgtexture and I created a 4000x4000 brand new wonderful bricks texture. Maybe I made this to test my astonishing Wacom IntuosIII. Uhhhhhhh...

the second is a reduction from a bigger render: 3500x2000 done in mental ray in 37 minutes, final gather and beauty pass. the smallest is 1024x576, the final resolution for the animation, and it was rendered in about 1:47. both compositing of ambient occlusion and color correction in photoshop

Ambient Occlusion without compositing

i don't know if someone could be interested. maybe this could be useful for the newbies in ambient occlusion or for quick render test in mental ray without final gather support.
i made this material some months ago in vray during the model of the castle. when i made render tests i didn't want to composite ambient occlusion for every frame, i just wanted a detail enhancement directly in the render test without made an ambient occlusion pass and composite all in photoshop. i made that with the vraydirt shader. in mental ray i thought that it's the same, but applying an ambient occlusion shader, faster then the vraydirt. i don't use the arch&design material that has a built in ambient occlusion option; i don't have the full control as a traditional ambient occlusion pass. this trick is also useful for quick render test without using any final gather or global illumination support, just 3 light setup; it's just fake global illumination, not rocket science.

here is the scene set

for this test i assigned the same material both to the model and the ground

the mental ray ambient occlusion pass. make the tune of the ambient occlusion as usual

generally i have to composite the last 2 renders together in photoshop in multiply blend mode, but if i want blend it directly in max frame buffer without photoshop i just make a material blend with 2 materials , the grey mat and a standard black mat, and using the ambient occlusion as the blend mask.

the contruction of the blend material. i used the previous grey material and i added a black material to simulate occluded parts of the model and the ambient occlusion shader as the blend mask that tells where is the occluded part (black meterial) and the unoccluded part (grey material).

put the 2 materials and the mask and make a render test. if something going wrong like this

just swap the gray and black material.

here is the final render with the material correctly applied.

i can adjust the intensity of the ambient occlusion changing the upper and lower values in the mixing curve of the blend material. for the final render i use 1 for the upper value and 0 for the lower. 0 on both values is like the simple grey material without the support of the ambient occlusion, vice versa, 1 in both values will make the whole image black.

this trick avoid the use of the final gather for the global illumination, this just fake it. this is useful to avoid the photoshop composite pass.
it could be also done with a mix map in the diffuse channel of the material; there's a lot of ways to achieve the same results.
this is not like to put a simple color, or texture, in the unoccluded map slot of the ambient occlusion shader beacause that will not consider the lights influences like direct illumination and shadows. you can make a reflective, textured material as usual and at the same time give ambient occlusion on refractive and reflective surfaces.
sometimes i find it useful and quick during modeling or materials setup, but for final renders i always separate the beauty render and the ambient occlusion pass and i composite it in photoshop.

A quick forest test using pflow. Trees are placed using a vol selection on a meshsmoothed surface. It's about 36 kmq (6x6 kms) with 4 different events that generate 4 type of tree, it's 5.000x4 istance

Once i finished the exterior walls i began to test the environment: I used mapped cross plane multiplyed on a surface using pflow. pflow is very useful for placing trees: I use pflow as the itoo software plugin Forest; i can decide to place tree on selected faces of the surface selecting polygon by polygon or using a vol select modifier with a noise/smoke map or a given grayscale map.

Le Chateau de Pierrefonds

For my architecture thesys i decided to talk about the Castle of Pierrefonds. I decided to rebuild it in 3ds max and render a 7 minutes sequence. I will show it during my talk. I began to model last year: the first max file was created on 24th april. it took me about one year to model the whole castle and it's not finished yet: exterior is still missing. It count about 2.300.000 polys. Here are some render of the wip. I began to render it in vray, but I decided to render the final in mental ray.
